Affordable SEN advocacy and exam access arrangement testing

Every child needs a team. I can help you to help your child at school.

Do you know how to:

  • advocate for your child at school?
  • understand the acronyms, terms and language of the school?
  • hold the school to account for fulfilling your child’s special educational needs (SEN)?
  • get your child assessed or diagnosed?
  • get exam access arrangements put into place?

What is advocacy?

Advocacy is speaking up on behalf of a parent, child or young person. You may advocate for your own children or someone else’s child. You may be related to them or not. You may be helping another parent or friend. But you want to make things better or fairer for the person you are helping.

Why do I need help?

The UK educational system is complicated. There are lots of people to talk to at a school: who do you start with? The Principal? The Assistant Principal? The Head of Year or Key Stage? The child’s form tutor? If your child has special needs, this brings in another layer of people to choose from. The SENDCo? The Assistant SENDCo? The SEN Governor? The Designated Safeguarding Lead? Parents and guardians are often frustratingly lead from one person to another without answers or clarity.

Contacting the local education authority (LEA) is often just as frustrating. Meanwhile, time is passing quickly. That next set of assessments or exams is looming closer. Your child or young person may be refusing to go to school or they are constantly falling a foul of the behaviour policy.

How can Tarantini-on-Teaching Consultancy help you?

As an experienced teacher, SENDCo and school leader of 24 years, I know how to effectively navigate the system. I have advocated for my own children, for SEN students and for other parents, helping them get to the right person, set the agenda and get measurable, monitorable action put into place. I have written hundreds of documents on differentiation advice for subject teachers, Education Health Care applications, specialist assessment reports for exam access arrangements and teacher/parent trainings.

I have helped parents from other countries understand and navigate this system on behalf of their children whether or not English is their first language or whether there might be special educational needs undiagnosed.
